Joskus kaksikymmentävuotiaana tein osittain yllättäen, osittain harkitun päätöksen lähteä oikomaan hampaani. Vaikka päätös ja toteutus on vaatinut itseltä paljon malttia ja luottamusta lopputuloksen onnistumisesta, olen tällä hetkellä tyytyväinen päätökseeni. Ensinnäkin hampaitani oiottiin jo nuorena ala-asteiässä erilaisilla kiinteillä kojeilla ja itse irrotettavalla oiontalevyllä. Kuitenkin oikomisvika löytyi vielä täyden iän jälkeen, siispä ensin kuviin hampaista ja siitä se lähti.
Itsellä on käynyt enemmän kuin hyvä tuuri oikomishoidon suhteen, koska kunta, jossa asuin oli silloin vielä itsenäinen, joten olin etuoikeutettu pääsemään suupolin asiakkaaksi ja maksamaan vain poliklinikkamaksun. Silloinen Längelmäen kunta hoiti loput maksupuolesta, joita on sen jälkeen maksanut Jämsän kaupunki.
Oikomihoidon takia on tullut poistettua kahdet rautahampaat ylhäältä ja alhaalta, jotta pieneen leukaani sopii kaikki hampaat mahdollisimman suorina. Ns. raketit tulivat tässä tilanteessa hyvinkin tutuiksi, niin ylä- kuin alahampaidenkin kohdalla. Ja vaikka itselle kerrottiin rakettien kiristyksen olevan kipeä operaatio, voin täysin suoraan ja lämpimästi todeta, että ei se ole normaalia ikenen tuntoa kummoisempi asia, eli eipä tuo ole hampaiden pesua kummoisempi tilanne.
